Getting Started
How does The Damn Weather work?
The Damn Weather shows you real-time weather forecasts powered by Apple WeatherKit, paired with sarcastic phrases that describe your weather with a little more honesty than usual. Open the app, grant location access, and you'll see your local forecast immediately. Swipe left to view saved cities.
Does the app need location access?
Location access lets the app show weather for your current area. If you'd rather not share your location, you can skip it entirely and search for any city manually. The app works just fine either way.
I see "Where the hell are you?" when I open the app.
That's the app's way of asking for your location. You have two options:
- Use My Location grants location permission so the app can find your weather automatically
- Search Location lets you type in any city or zip code without sharing your location
Do I need to create an account?
No. The Damn Weather has no accounts, no sign-up, and no login. Just open it and go.
Managing Locations
How do I add a city?
Tap the list icon at the bottom of the screen to open your saved locations. Tap the search bar and type a city name or zip code. Tap a result to save it. You can save as many cities as you like.
How do I switch between cities?
On iPhone, swipe left or right to move between your current location and saved cities. On iPad, use the sidebar to select a location.
How do I delete a saved city?
Open your saved locations list, then long-press the city card you want to remove. Tap Delete from the menu that appears.
I'm getting "You've already saved that location."
That city is already in your saved list. Scroll through your saved locations to find it, or swipe through your pages on the main screen.
Explicit Mode
What is Explicit Mode?
Explicit Mode replaces the app's clean sarcastic phrases with versions that include profanity. It's the unfiltered version. The weather data stays exactly the same - only the commentary changes.
How do I turn it on or off?
Go to Settings and toggle Explicit Mode. When enabling it for the first time, you'll see a confirmation screen. You can turn it off again at any time the same way.
Is Explicit Mode appropriate for kids?
No. Explicit Mode contains strong profanity and is intended for users 16 and older. The app defaults to clean mode with no profanity. If you share your device with children, keep Explicit Mode turned off.
Can I get a new phrase?
Yes. Tap the phrase text on the main weather screen to generate a new one. There are thousands of unique phrases, so you'll rarely see the same one twice.
Widgets
How do I add a widget to my home screen?
- Long-press on an empty area of your home screen until the icons jiggle
- Tap the + button in the top-left corner
- Search for "The Damn Weather"
- Choose a size (small, medium, or large) and tap Add Widget
What sizes are available?
Three sizes:
- Small - Current temperature, condition, and a short phrase
- Medium - Temperature, condition, phrase, and hourly forecast
- Large - Everything in medium, plus the daily forecast
Why isn't my widget updating?
Widgets update on a schedule managed by iOS, typically every 15 minutes. If your widget seems stuck:
- Open the main app, which triggers a fresh data sync to the widget
- Make sure the app has location permission (Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services)
- Check that you have an internet connection
- Restart your device if the issue persists
Does the widget show explicit phrases?
Yes, if you have Explicit Mode enabled in the app. The widget reflects your current phrase mode setting.
Units & Settings
How do I change temperature units?
Open Settings (gear icon) and find the Units section. You can independently customize:
- Temperature (°F or °C)
- Wind speed (mph, km/h, knots, or m/s)
- Pressure (hPa, inHg, or mmHg)
- Precipitation (inches or mm)
- Distance (miles or km)
Where are my settings stored?
All settings are stored locally on your device. They are not synced across devices or backed up to any server. If you uninstall and reinstall the app, your preferences will reset to defaults.
Troubleshooting
The app says "Well, damn." with an error.
This means the app couldn't fetch weather data. Common causes:
- No internet connection - Check your Wi-Fi or cellular data
- Apple WeatherKit is temporarily down - Wait a few minutes and tap Retry
- Location couldn't be determined - Make sure location services are enabled for the app
Tap the Retry button to try again.
Weather data looks wrong or outdated.
Weather data comes from Apple WeatherKit and refreshes automatically. To force a fresh update, pull down on the main weather screen or close and reopen the app. If data still seems off, it may be a temporary issue with Apple's data sources.
Location isn't working.
- Go to your device's Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services
- Make sure Location Services is turned on
- Find The Damn Weather in the list and set it to While Using the App
- Return to the app - it should detect your location automatically
If you previously denied permission, you may need to change it in Settings since iOS doesn't re-prompt after a denial.
The app is using too much battery.
The Damn Weather only accesses your location while the app is open ("While Using" permission). It does not track your location in the background. If you notice unusual battery usage, try force-closing and reopening the app.
How do I report a bug?
Email us at support@hivewerks.com with a description of the issue, your device model, and iOS version. Screenshots help too.
Data & Privacy
Where does the weather data come from?
All weather data is provided by Apple WeatherKit, which aggregates data from national and international meteorological services.
What data does the app collect?
Only your location (when you grant permission) to fetch your local weather. That's it. No names, no email, no accounts, no device IDs, no analytics, no tracking. Everything is stored on your device and never sent to our servers - because we don't have any.
How do I delete my data?
All data is stored locally on your device. Delete individual saved cities by long-pressing them, or uninstall the app to remove everything. There's nothing on our end to delete because we never had it.
Is there a full privacy policy?
Yes. Read our complete Privacy Policy for all the details.
